How do I check the terms of reference of a committee?

Each committee’s terms of reference can be viewed by clicking the terms of reference tab under each committee’s dedicated page.

What is a member-at-large?

A member-at-large acts as a representative of the membership on a committee/board. They don’t have another assigned title on that committee (e.g., chair) or another position in the Society that requires them to be on the committee (e.g., Chair of the AGM Committee being on the Education Committee).

 

I am a fellow, can I be a member of any committee or apply for a leadership position?

Fellows are welcome to apply for open positions they believe are relevant for them.

  • Only to fellow representative positions available in various committees
  • Leadership of Fellows Educational Course Planning Committee

I am an international member, can I be a member of any committee or apply for a leadership position?

International can be members of any available committees (except for the board, executive and guidelines committees) but cannot apply for a leadership position. 

Do I lose my position if I do not pay my GOC membership dues?

As per the GOC’s bylaw, GOC members must be in good standing to apply/ maintain their position. You can log into Glue-Up to view your membership dues to ensure you are in good standing.

I am a medical student, what positions can I apply for?

A medical student cannot apply to open positions.The Communities of Practice are open to medical students.

Do I need to be a GOC member for a certain number of years before joining a committee?

You do not need a certain number of years before applying to general positions. Select leadership positions will require at least 2 years of experience on another committee. This will be mentioned in the position description when an opening is posted.

Can I nominate myself for a position?

Yes, you can do so by submitting the nomination form and selecting “nominate myself” when prompted.

How many meetings do I need to attend per year to maintain my position?

Most committees have 2 or 3 meetings a year. It is important that you are able to attend your committees’ meetings. The meeting requirements will be made available in the position description of an opening. A committee member who does not uphold their responsibilities or misses 2 meetings without a reasonable explanation will be asked by the Chair to resign from the committee. If the member refuses to resign, a vote shall be taken on the removal of the member from the committee.

Will I know if someone nominates me for a position?

You will receive an email letting you know that you have been nominated for a position. The name of the person who nominated you will remain anonymous.

How long is the position term?

All committee terms are for 2 years and can be renewed by the same member once.

When is the due date to nominate myself or others?

All applications must be received by April 15, 2022.
